How do you instruct someone (rather, something) on being human?

The 5th Wall Theatre production of Uncanny Valley by Thomas Gibbons bridges the gap between man and machine as Claire, a neuroscientist played by Jacqueline Jones, instructs the android Julian (Alexander Sapp) on being human. Julian is named for the wealthy but dying man whose DNA he receives, along with the contents of the man’s mind and the appearance of his younger self. Auditions and callbacks were more extensive than usual, says Carol Piersol, artistic director. “We had to get the chemistry and the look of the two people right so it all gels.” Uncanny Valley runs from Sept. 10 to Oct. 3 at the HATTheatre. $28. 5thwalltheatre.org.
